"The Surface" Exhibition, Featuring Artist Sia Joung - Exhibition ends August 9, 2020

Artist Bio: Sia Joung is an artist and an educator who lives and works in Sterling, Kansas.  She holds an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa.  Her work has been exhibited throughout the US, including Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, MO; Des Lee Gallery, St. Louis, MO; The Delaware Contemporary Art Museum, Wilmington, DE and Delaware College Art Gallery, Media, PA.

Artist Statement:  Growing up as an immigrant in a small town of Iowa, my natural inclination towards the Regionalists' paintings unintentionally revealed a displacement of an Asian American in Midwest.  In a similar sense, living in a rural Kansas has perpetuated my identity as a Christian without my intention.  My work observes how my identities receive different shading and change their distinctiveness as my location shifts.  As my identies shift, my mediums chnage correspondingly.  My goal as an artist is to capture this complexity and it layers to visualize in paintings and installations.
